Fernando Mendoza is the race director for this inaugural event.

King of the HILLS

5K/10K/Biathlon

Race Date: Saturday, April

28, 2007

Location: The Lazy Lilac

Ranch in Glennville, CA

The First Annual KING OF THE HILLS event was a total success! All the competitors were clear as to why the name King of the HILLS. We had a great turn-out in all events. All top finishers received $50 cash with Polo Duarte (winner of the men's 5K) and Maribel Resendez (winner of the woman's 10K) donating their money to the Betty Ann Ong Foundation.  Maribel also commented at the end of the 10K run that it seemed so much harder than the Marathon that she ran earlier in the year! Maybe that's why several runners who registered for the 10K stopped at the half-way mark. I won't mention any names to protect the innocent :)

The day was a little warm... warmer than it had been earlier in the month. The trail was clearly marked for those lead runners. And there were several sections where the crowds gathered to cheer all participants. Those who felt like walking were encouraged to keep on pushing as the finish line would soon appear.  As for the filming crew...they also had a great time capturing all the action.  From the cameraman on the back of the quad to the guy getting the finishers to the other cameraman recording some action on the "Switchbacks"... we'll soon have a final edited copy available for sale for only $29. The proceeds will go to the filming crew as a reward for all their hard work that day.

What to expect next April 2008:

1. Same exact course so you can IMPROVE your time and performance... and so you can INVITE others to join you in the challenge.

2. Earlier start of all races. Also, prompt starting times.

3. Overnight camping will be offered for those who want to come out Friday evening and enjoy the fresh mountain air early Saturday morning.

4. Sponsor booths and other vendors will be offering food, runner's gear, outdoor equipment, etc.

5. More runners and mountain bikers ~ the competition will only get better.

Come out and participate or help us cheer for those brave souls who dare to take on the challenge... the quadburning, lung-expanding, heartthrobbing, star-seeing, lactic acid building challenge of HILL RUNNING.

Yours Truly,

Fernando Mendoza
